Chennai, Sep 30 (IANS) Hindu Munnani founder Ramagopalan (94) succumbed to Covid-19 at a private hospital here on Wednesday, said the organisation's Tamil Nadu President.

According to Kadeswara C. Subramaniam, Hindu Munnani state President, Ramagopalan was admitted to the hospital on September 27 as he had breathing problems and did not respond to treatment.

Ramagopalan founded the Hindu Munnani in 1980 to protect Hindu religion, temples and for the welfare of the Hindus.

The organisation was founded after several Dalit families converted to Islam in Meenakshipuram in Tamil Nadu.

Born in 1927 in Sirkazhi, Ramagopalan worked in the state power utility after completing AMIE. In 1945, he joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).

The Hindu Munnani was known for the grand celebration of Vinayaka Chathurthi across the state by installing thousands of idols and later immersing them in the sea or other water bodies.

Expressing his condolences, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K. Palaniswami said Ramagopalan was a freedom fighter and was also a guiding light for Hindu Munnani.

Tamil Nadu BJP President L. Murugan said Ramagopalan, who was working at the power utility, quit that job to start Hindu Munnani.

Ramagopalan also voiced his opposition to cow slaughter, said Murugan.

He said that Ramagopalan was in coma for 30 days after he was seriously injured in his head after a murderous attack.

The BJP leader said that as a mark of respect, the official functions of the party stood cancelled for three days.

Condoling the death, DMK President M.K. Stalin recalled the friendship that existed between his father and former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi and Ramagopalan.

Stalin said even though both the leaders had opposite ideologies, they used to interact well.
