A full bench of the Madras High Court quashes the Tamil Nadu Government order making Tamil (or mother tongue) as the compulsory medium of instruction in all schools in the State up to Standard V.

6/28/1972Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis died. He was the first founder of Indian statistical Institute to receive world recognition. In 1958, he started his national sample surveys. A Sample survey means assessing a situation by studying a part of it which would represent the whole, some of his proposals were included in the second five year paln. His original work made him elected as fellow of the Royal society in 1945.
8/29/1947Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar became the President of Constitution Council.
10/31/1843Tarkanath Gangopadhyay, first realistic social novelist of Bengal, was born.
7/8/1999The bodies of 12 soldiers, who martyred in Kargil battle, were brought to New Delhi. So far 321 soldiers were killed and 476 wounded in operation Vijay.

2/20/1982The Kangla Tongbi war memorial built for 221 members of Advance Base Depot, who laid down their lives to repulse several waves of Japanese attacks, was finally shifted to College of Materials Management Jabalpur. The original memorial was erected on 15 Apr 1946 from local stone and the main epitaph displayed above is of black Naga stone.
